Republicans are soft-pedaling Project 2025 even as they promote it

MILWAUKEE — Supporters of Project 2025 are following President Donald Trump’s lead and soft-pedaling the blueprint for his potential next term following weeks of Democrats demonizing the plan that proposes banning abortion nationwide, militarizing the border, outlawing transgender identity, ending diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and crippling the power of federal departments like the Environmental Protection Agency.

Trump’s campaign has tried to distance itself from Project 2025 as some of its proposals — particularly its call for a national abortion ban — could be toxic to its attempts to woo swing voters. Trump has said that he has “no idea who is behind” the plan, though a CNN investigation found that 140 former Trump administration officials had a hand in crafting it. 

Even at a policy forum Monday put on by the Heritage Foundation, the think tank that led 110 other conservative organizations in crafting the 900-page document, Republicans sought to downplay the plan.
